Hospitality Job Opportunities
In The 21st Century

Just like with any kind of industry, the hospitality industry has trends too.

If you are planning to make a career change and you are considering taking advantage of hospitality job opportunities that could be a rewarding decision.

Hopefully, it will help you to make good choices if you are able to take into account key developments in the industry. So, here's a 'heads-up' on some trends affecting hospitality careers.

New Properties

Be on watch for new properties. These drive employment growth. The launching and opening of newly built high-end resorts along with their restaurants, hotels and other amenities can foster job growth both now and for many years in future as a resort develops and becomes more widely known.

This could be very good news for you. For instance, big hotels and properties typically need about 1,600 people to staff the place full time. Now, just think of how many new hotels and resorts would be opening in a year? At a rate of 1,600 new staff per hotel!

More Services Offered Means More Jobs Opportunities For You!

“All-Inclusive Packages” are very popular with new travellers. Also, seasoned travellers seek an ever expanding choice of optional extras for their comfort and entertainment.

So what does this mean? More job positions of course!
Whether guests want room service, a massage, fitness counselling, coaching with a game or sport, guided tours or themed activities, the industry has to hire lots of specialists to cater all these options.

This is true even in times of economic difficulty, because hard times are particularly stressful. In fact, folks need that break even more than ever. So, even if they have to cut back some, they will still try hard to organize a vacation of some description.

Too Many Cooks

Another seen trend is that culinary schools are everywhere nowadays. In fact, you could even see their ads on daytime television. So, what does this mean?—they’ll be producing tons of graduates of course! Hence, there would be more competition. So, if you think you don’t really have the heart for cooking, it would be best that you skip this kind of specialty and try to go for a different one.

Too Few Managers

If the industry is enjoying an over-supply for chefs, the contrary is happening for management. Unknown to many, there is a great need for managers in this industry. This is most especially true for food chains.

Most companies are not in need for trained chefs anymore, but instead what they need are managers and supervisors who can efficiently deal with people, do the math and plan things right. So, if you think you have this knack, then why not try management for a change?

The Effect of Stress

Everybody gets their dose of stress from time to time. And most folks perceive the trend is to more rather than less stress in their lives. Because of stress at work and at home, people need a break and eventually become desperate for a vacation and change of scene. And when they do get a vacation, they want nothing more than to be cosseted, pampered and served!

Seek a Business with Stable Demand

Because situations and circumstances change, it is inevitable that travel and accomodation services suffer some client back-outs and cancellations. Also from natural variations due to seasonal and economic cycles.

This is why it is prudent to choose establishments focussed toward clients making long term plans and with reservations well in advance. Or whose clients NEED to travel for their living.

If you’re working in a hotel which primarily serves private individuals who book their vacations one week ahead, then your company is likely most vulnerable to travel slowdowns and seasonal variations.

Those hotels that serve businesses are usually booked for conventions one year ahead. This trade has more security built into it than cheap short-stay trips for private consumers. Although, some luxury or themed holiday packages are also booked months, or even years, in advance.

So, it is recommended that you carefully consider the type of company you’ll be working for, and the stability of the market they serve.

Generally, demand is more stable for hotels and services that primarily cater to business clients.
